Iran has accused Israel of being behind the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the top political leader of Hamas, who was killed in an explosion in Tehran last week. The Iranian government has vowed to respond with “power and decisiveness” to the killing, saying it has the right to guarantee its security and punish the aggressor. However, they have also stated they are not seeking to escalate tensions in the region. The head of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard warned that Israel was “digging its own grave” with its actions in the Gaza Strip.
This comes as Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a drone attack on northern Israel that wounded two Israeli troops, escalating fears of a wider regional conflict. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned that the military is prepared for a possible Iranian attack and a “swift transition to offence.”
In Greece, there are concerns that Iran or Iranian-backed terrorists may target Israeli interests after Greece’s National Intelligence Service received a warning from foreign security services. The killing of Haniyeh and a senior Hezbollah commander, along with the recent violence, have raised fears of a widening war in the region.
The situation remains tense as Iran threatens retaliation against Israel for the death of Haniyeh. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping to prevent further escalation and protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
