Putin offers aid to North Korea for floods after Kim Jong-un rejects Seoul’s help.

Russia has offered humanitarian aid to North Korea after the country was hit by devastating floods that damaged thousands of homes and caused numerous casualties. Reports suggest that the death toll could be as high as 1,500.

President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and pledged support to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in a telegram after a record downpour on 27 July submerged farmland in the north near China. Despite this offer, Kim stated that his government has already taken steps to conduct recovery efforts and would only ask for help if necessary.

Heavy rains have flooded more than 4,000 homes and isolated 5,000 residents in North Korea’s north-western regions. Kim personally inspected the affected areas, while also accusing South Korean media of spreading rumors about the devastation caused by the floods.

South Korea has also offered humanitarian aid to North Korea following reports of the high death and missing toll, which could reach 1,500. North Korea accused South Korean media of spreading false rumors to tarnish the country’s image.

North Korea and Russia, long-time allies, have strengthened their diplomatic and security ties in recent months, with Kim and Putin signing a strategic partnership pact in June.

Both countries have pledged continued support and cooperation in the face of this natural disaster.
