A storm south of Cuba is expected to strengthen and become a tropical storm as it moves towards Florida’s west coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Currently called Tropical Depression Four, it could be named Debby once it becomes a tropical storm. Maximum sustained winds of 30 mph were reported as of late Friday, but the National Hurricane Center predicts it will continue to gain strength. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the west coast of Florida, with the possibility of strong winds, storm surge, flooding, and heavy rain. The storm is expected to bring 1 to 4 feet of storm surge flooding and 4 to 8 inches of rain to the area. In Cuba, rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible. The storm is expected to strengthen over the weekend as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. This storm could potentially become the fourth named storm of the North Atlantic hurricane season earlier than usual. Prior to this storm, the hurricane season had been relatively quiet with fewer named storms than usual.
