Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, schedules special election to fill the vacant seat of the late Representative Sheila Jackson Lee

Governor Greg Abbott has set a special election to replace the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee on November 5, 2024, which will determine who will serve out the remainder of her term until January. The general election on the same day will determine who will serve the next term until 2027. There will be no primary for the general election, as Jackson Lee won in March. Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and former City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards have announced their candidacy to replace Jackson Lee. Edwards had previously challenged Jackson Lee in the primary. Any other candidates must declare their candidacy by August 22. Mourners, including Vice President Kamala Harris, attended Jackson Lee’s memorial service in Houston. Jackson Lee had served in the House since 1995. Turner and Edwards have expressed their intention to honor Jackson Lee’s legacy and lead the 18th Congressional District forward. The special election will be held alongside the general election, with Democratic precinct chairs selecting a party nominee for the general election later this month.
