Orville Peck, a South African musician known for his nonconformist spirit in country music, is set to release his third album, “Stampede,” a duets album featuring collaborations with the likes of Willie Nelson, Elton John, Mickey Guyton, and Kylie Minogue. Peck first gained attention with his debut album, “Pony,” where he concealed his identity and face behind a mask. As his confidence grew, he started to reveal more of himself, now only wearing a hat and eye mask.
The duets album is a reflection of his self-assurance, featuring collaborations that are a mix of his own style and that of the other artists. Peck’s collaboration with Willie Nelson on the song “Cowboys” holds special significance, as Nelson’s support for the LGBTQ community resonated with Peck.
“Stampede” also includes non-traditionalist duets and covers, such as a bluegrass cover of the Magnetic Fields’ song “Papa Was a Rodeo” with Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway, and a disco number “Midnight Ride” with Kylie Minogue and Diplo. Peck emphasizes the importance of visibility and inclusivity in his music and art.
Despite feeling like an outsider in the traditional country music industry, Peck remains confident in his identity and artistic vision, prioritizing his music speaking for itself over conforming to industry norms. He finds validation in working with legendary artists he admires and the support he receives, even if he may not fit the typical country radio mold.
