WKRG News 5 reports that Utah State Fires Blake Anderson for Conducting Interview with Potential Victim Following Aggies Player’s Arrest.

Utah State head football coach, Blake Anderson, was fired for failing to report information related to a domestic violence incident involving a player, according to a termination letter obtained by the Associated Press. Anderson was accused of contacting potential victims and witnesses without reporting the incident properly, violating university policy. Despite his claims of being fired for “convenience,” investigations found him in breach of Title IX policies.

Anderson’s attorney, Tom Mars, accused the university of conducting a “sham” investigation and pointed to a trend in college sports where schools attempt to manufacture reasons to fire high-paid coaches without paying the buyout. Anderson was owed a $4.5 million buyout as his contract was valid until 2027. Utah State also fired two other staff members for similar violations related to reporting of sexual and domestic violence incidents.

In response, Utah State President Elizabeth Cantwell stated that Anderson’s termination was based on facts, despite the impact it may have. Nate Dreiling was appointed as the interim coach for the upcoming season, with the team opening against Robert Morris on August 31. Anderson had a 23-17 record with a Mountain West title in three seasons at Utah State and is 74-54 in his coaching career.

The termination of Anderson marks a shift in Utah State’s commitment to building an athletics program centered on student success and integrity. Despite the controversy, the Aggies are preparing for the upcoming season under new leadership.
