The Union Agricultural Fair at Palmyra has decided to step in and offer a free harvest festival in place of the canceled Canaltown Days event. The decision to host the family-friendly event was made quickly after Canaltown Days’ board of directors announced the cancellation of their festival, which was scheduled for September 14-15. The new festival at the fairgrounds will kick off on September 13 and include various activities such as vendor booths, a car show, a 5K run, and musical entertainment.
Canaltown Days, which has been a staple in the Palmyra community since 1967, cited reasons such as inadequate vendor response, increasing costs, and a shortage of volunteers for their decision to cancel the event. The news of the cancellation was met with disappointment from the community, as Canaltown Days has served as a major fundraiser for local organizations and a highlight of the fall season.
Despite the fair not intending to replicate Canaltown Days, they have extended invitations to vendors to set up stalls in various buildings on the fairgrounds. Additionally, new volunteers have come forward to assist with organizing the impromptu festival, ensuring that the community will have a fun and engaging event to look forward to in mid-September. Mayor David Husk expressed disappointment about the cancellation of Canaltown Days and emphasized the importance of preserving community events like these in Palmyra.
