Georgia’s unemployment rate saw a slight increase last month, rising to 3.3% from 3.2% in May, according to the state Department of Labor. Commissioner of Labor, Bruce Thompson, attributed the rise to the influx of students entering the workforce over the summer. Despite this increase, Georgia’s jobless rate in June was still lower than the national average.
The state saw growth in employment with the number of jobs increasing by 0.2% last month. Georgia’s labor force also saw an increase of 15,502 individuals, totaling nearly 5.4 million, while the number of employed Georgians rose by 8,493 to over 5.2 million. Job sectors that experienced the largest gains included healthcare and social assistance, as well as transportation and warehousing.
On the flip side, job sectors such as administrative and support services, as well as local government, saw decreases in employment. Initial unemployment claims increased by 9% last month, totaling 21,867, but over the year, first-time jobless claims declined by 7%.
Despite the slight rise in unemployment, Georgia’s economy continues to show signs of growth and resilience. The state’s workforce is bolstered by new talent and energy each summer, helping to cultivate a strong and lasting economy. As the summer months progress, it will be interesting to see how the job market in Georgia continues to evolve.
