A global technology outage caused chaos across Southland airports, ports, and businesses on Friday, with IT experts warning that it could take weeks for the global tech infrastructure to fully recover. The massive outage was sparked by a botched software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, leading to widespread computer system failures worldwide. Southland airports such as LAX, John Wayne, and Hollywood Burbank experienced flight delays and cancellations, while the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach faced disruptions in cargo operations. American Airlines and other carriers were impacted, with thousands of flights delayed or canceled. CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz confirmed that the issue was not a security incident and that a fix had been deployed. Los Angeles Superior Court reported a separate ransomware attack, unrelated to the global tech outage. Despite the widespread disruption, operations at the ports and airports returned to normal by the end of the day. The Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and emergency response agencies were not affected. Amtrak, Metrolink, and even Starbucks experienced issues with their systems as a result of the outage. CrowdStrike officials have rolled back the flawed update, while Microsoft is investigating the extent of the outage. As businesses and agencies work to recover from the unprecedented IT outage, the focus now is on implementing solutions to prevent such disruptions in the future.
