Orlando International Airport experienced a global technology outage on Friday morning, causing flights to be grounded and affecting banks, media outlets, and other services worldwide. The chaos at the airport led to delays and cancellations, with multiple carriers experiencing issues with operations. Passengers described crowded scenes and delays at Central Florida airports, impacting services at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and Florida’s Turnpike.
American Airlines and Delta were temporarily on a ground stop at Orlando International Airport but have since resumed operations after resolving technical issues. United Airlines, however, is still reportedly experiencing delays due to the outages. The airline has issued a waiver for travelers to change their plans online or through their app.
Some passengers, like Jakwan Barnett, were lucky that the delays did not impact their travel plans, while others like Stephen Ndukwe faced uncertainty and extended stays due to flight cancellations. Orlando Sanford International Airport also experienced delays, with Allegiant Air canceling all flights before 2 p.m.
The cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike clarified that the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack but affected Microsoft 365 apps and services. The disruptions continued for hours even after fixes were implemented. The impact of the outages in Florida extended beyond airports, affecting services like Florida’s Turnpike and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight information and to allow extra time for check-in and baggage processing.
