Disneyland workers vote to approve strike action for thousands of workers

Four unions representing more than 14,000 Disney theme park and resort workers in Southern California have voted to authorize a strike by an overwhelming 99%, citing unfair labor practices during contract negotiations. This includes employees at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and Disney-owned hotels. The authorization doesn’t mean an immediate strike, but if it does happen, it would be the first at Disneyland in 40 years.

The employees are fighting for fair contracts and have accused Disney of engaging in unfair labor practices, such as discipline, intimidation, and surveillance of union members. The workers feel undervalued, despite their critical role in creating a magical experience for guests. The labor dispute has been ongoing since negotiations began in April, with workers filing unfair labor practice charges in June, which are now being investigated by the National Labor Relations Board.

Disneyland workers have faced economic struggles, with a significant portion unable to cover basic expenses each month and experiencing food and housing insecurity. Despite being part of “The Happiest Place on Earth”, many employees are facing hardships due to economic challenges.

The four unions representing the workers have expired contracts, with negotiations ongoing and a commitment to return to the bargaining table. The last strike at Disneyland was in 1984, lasting 22 days. The strike authorization vote gives the bargaining committee the ability to call a strike at any time if necessary.
