John Michael Cole, a former assistant coach at VCU and head coach at Fayetteville State, has been named the head coach of the Georgia State men’s golf program. Cole helped coach VCU to the Atlantic 10 Conference title and an eighth-place finish in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional during the 2023-24 season.
During his five-year tenure at Fayetteville State, Cole led the team to NCAA berths in two of his final three seasons, including a CIAA Championship in 2022-23, where he was named the league’s Coach of the Year and HBCU National Coach of the Year.
Cole started his coaching career at Fayetteville Technical Community College, where he was awarded Coach of the Year honors and led the team to a victory at the NJCAA Region X Championship.
As a collegiate golfer, Cole won five collegiate victories and was named CIAA Player of the Year before transferring to Appalachian State, where he served as team captain. He also had success on the professional links, winning the 2015 Crow Creek Invitational on the Coastal Players Tour.
A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Cole is married to Emery Sherrill Cole. His appointment as head coach of the Georgia State men’s golf team brings a wealth of experience and success to the program.
