The Elks organization recently hosted their first annual picnic on the Metolius, attended by hundreds of people from surrounding areas. The event included campfires, dancing, and a moonlight serenade. Meanwhile, a five-year-old boy made headlines by climbing Bachelor butte with ease. Plans for pavement improvements on Hill Street were ordered by the city council, and a new Union Oil Co. station was set to open in Prineville.
In other news, a new ski tow was set to be built at Hoodoo bowl, and despite dry conditions, an unusual display of wildflowers was seen near Bend. The Pioneer Park rose garden was dedicated to World War II veterans as a symbol of peace and remembrance. Central Oregon Community College approved a 10-year building plan, prioritizing construction of various academic programs and an addition to the Student Union building.
Tragically, Reuben A “Reub” Long, a well-known desert philosopher and conservationist from Fort Rock, passed away at the age of 76. Long was a member of various agricultural and conservation committees, leaving behind a legacy of environmental advocacy and wisdom.
