A group of ten congressional Democrats, including close allies of Nancy Pelosi, have joined the call for President Joe Biden to step aside as the party’s nominee. This brings the total number of Hill Democrats wanting someone else at the top of the ticket to over 30. These recent defections in the House and Senate include key supporters of Biden from various constituencies such as the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Equality Caucus, and the Progressive Caucus. They believe that Biden’s age and fitness are raising concerns and jeopardizing what should be a winning campaign against Donald Trump. The group of Democrats released a joint statement urging Biden to “pass the torch” to younger leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris to reinvigorate the race and gain momentum heading into the convention. Additionally, individual representatives such as Sean Casten and Greg Landsman have also called for Biden to step down in op-eds and social media posts. Despite the growing pressure, Biden’s campaign manager has reiterated that he is in the race to win and plans to continue as the nominee, citing his support from 14 million Democratic primary voters. Biden’s team acknowledges that there has been a decline in support following a tough debate performance but believes there is still a viable path to victory.
