HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. – Tommy Shireman, owner of Third Way Farm, shared his unique farming philosophy during a field day sponsored by Future Harvest. Shireman, who views farming as a spiritual practice, emphasized the importance of caring for the earth and using farming as a way to make a positive impact on the environment.
Despite not having a background in farming, Shireman felt called to pursue agriculture as a mission after various experiences in ministry. He believes that his farm, Third Way Farm, named after the concept of non-violence, offers a positive alternative to industrial farming practices that harm the soil and local communities. By using innovative methods such as no-till farming and tarps to suppress weeds, Shireman has been able to cultivate a thriving 67-acre farm that prioritizes soil health and sustainability.
During the field day, attendees learned about Shireman’s no-till strategies, companion planting, cover cropping, composting, and livestock operations. Shireman also highlighted the importance of biodiversity, perennial crops, and attracting beneficial insects to the farm to create a healthy ecosystem. Participants, including experienced and aspiring farmers, came from different regions to gain knowledge and inspiration from Shireman’s unique approach to farming.
Shireman’s dedication to sustainable and environmentally-friendly farming practices has proven to be successful, with berries being one of the most profitable crops on his farm. By sharing his experiences and expertise, Shireman hopes to inspire others to adopt similar methods to care for the land and create a more sustainable future for agriculture.
