Prominent House Democrat Adam Schiff of California joined a growing chorus of Democrats calling for President Joe Biden to end his reelection bid. Amid concerns about his candidacy following a disastrous debate performance, 19 House Democrats and one senator have publicly asked Biden to step down. Despite this pressure, Biden, 81, remains steadfast in his decision to continue his campaign, citing his qualifications and electability.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly urged Biden to withdraw in a private conversation over the weekend, but a spokesperson for Schumer dismissed the report as “idle speculation.” Meanwhile, Biden tested positive for COVID-19 after a campaign event in Nevada, prompting him to cancel an event and isolate at home.
The Democratic National Convention Rules Committee declared that there will be no virtual roll call to determine the party’s nominee before August 1, in response to Ohio election laws. Schiff, a well-known figure nationally, called on Biden to pass the torch and secure his legacy by allowing another candidate to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
Polls indicate growing dissatisfaction among Democrats with Biden’s reelection bid, with nearly two-thirds of them wanting him to step down and give someone else a chance. In contrast, Republicans overwhelmingly support Trump’s bid for the White House. Since Biden’s lackluster debate performance, a growing number of congressional Democrats have called for him to withdraw, although the Biden-Harris campaign has not yet commented on the matter.
